Now that is Spring, it's warming up, you are thinking about selling your home or you just want a change you've decided to do some improvements and updates around the house...here are some tips of what NOT TO DO when trying to add value to your home.
Myth #1: Any remodel is a good one...
Ummmm...No. Some people think that any improvement is a good one, but not all home improvements are created equal. For example, I recently saw a home with a fireman pole in it! What? Cool for kids.. but seriously, not every homeowner is going to want to slide down this pole to get downstairs. Oy vay! Unless, the next homeowner has children or are firemen, they may not want this in their home. When making a renovation like this, keep in mind that you may want to sell the place one day.
Myth #2: I can do it myself
You may be convinced that you can do it just as well as a contractor and will save money this way, But here's the truth... You can't and you won't!
You may have an unrealistic idea of your "DIY" ideas or "knack" for remodeling. Doing it yourself can sometimes save money, but you need to know your limits. Don't be afraid to ask for help and hire someone who knows what to do with electrical wires, walls that may be load bearing, or anything else BIG. There are certain low-risk projects that are very simple to tackle on your own, but there are many others for which you will need a professional.
Myth #3: Pools add value.
Whoo hoo! I want a pool! It's summertime... a perfect time to get a pool installed! Right? WRONG!
A lot of people think that adding a swimming pool and/or hot tub is a sure seller. That is not always true. Location is very important. If we had Florida weather... then it would be a GREAT thing.. but we don't. Adding a pool can be a scary proposition. It's a big liability and can be a lot of work to maintain in the winter. Think long and hard about building a pool. This could, in the end, be a big money pit in your backyard.
Myth #4: Follow the latest design trends.
Many homeowners think it's a good idea to follow the latest design trends. Not true. For instance, peach textured wall paper went out in the 80's. I know.. I had it in my room. Ugh! Features like that must go before a house goes on the market. Keep it NEUTRAL! Neutral colors or hues have more of a timeless feel and will appeal to more people. If you have to go with the trendy colors and patterns.... think about adding some throw pillows.
