April showers bring May flowers… and potentially the need for a space to kick off muddy boots and hang up the raincoats and umbrellas. Fall and Winter bring heavy coats, scarves, and more boots. And whatever the season, it’s nice to have a place to keep it all organized. A Mudroom can be just about any size. Not every home comes with a separate room to designate as a mudroom but with some creativity, I am sure you can transform a wall, hallway, entrance, closet, garage into a unique separate area that is now YOUR VERY OWN MUDROOM. This space whether it is large or small has added benefits to a home in more ways than one.
Keep the Home Cleaner
No one likes to have the kids tracking in a bunch of dirt or mud every time they walk into the home. A mudroom creates a middle ground between the outside and the home. Family members can use the mudroom as a place to hold wet shoes, boots, coats and other outdoor gear. This keeps the wet mess out of the house.
Organize the Entry and Exit
Getting out the door in the morning can be a big hassle when everything needed for the day has just been tossed in any old place. With a nicely organized mudroom, everyone in the household can put their items in the right spot every time. When it is time to leave again, they know where to find coats, shoes, and bags.
Improve Home Value
The extra room is always a bonus when it comes time to sell the home. Buyers look for storage and a nicely organized place. Putting in a mudroom with storage options like cabinets and benches make the space more inviting and useful. A home with a well-designed mudroom will increase your home’s value and make it easier to sell fast, and maybe even above asking price.
Homeowners often lament exterior doors that are always opening and closing, simply because of the energy waste it creates. The mudroom builds in an added layer of insulation for the rest of the home. When the mudroom bears the brunt of the temperature changes, it is not as expensive to heat or cool the house.
- A hallway that makes the most of both sides, and makes a statement when entering a home.
- Mudroom corner, it doesn’t necessarily need to be long and narrow, use that empty corner and make the most of that space!
- Narrow space, you can still fit cubbies and a bench, maybe do an accent wall behind taking it to the next level.
- Garage solution, use that space when there just isn’t any room in the house. Create an organized and welcoming solution just inside that garage door.
One of the fun things about creating this space new or old is the ability to add your own unique spin. Do you love color, shiplap, chalkboards, lots of hooks, and maybe even statement flooring? Don’t forget this area is a great place to include those furry four-legged family members. Try Incorporating their kennels, bins for toys, and leashes.
The options and creative freedom with a smaller project like this are endless. Check out Pinterest to get more ideas and start working on this next weekend!
