10 Things that turn off Homebuyers

When your selling your home, you want it to make a great first impression. From the moment a potential buyer pulls up to the house, walk thru the front door and all the way to when they leave. You want them to imagine themselves already living there.

Here are 10 things that can turn off a buyer and cause them to run from your home.

#1 Does your home have a pet odor? Pets are the biggest reason for smelly homes. Litter boxes or accidents inside the home can create such a stench.

#2 Do you have a room or two or three that should be spotlighted on the show Hoarders? Having too much stuff in a home will stop a buyer from envisioning their stuff fitting in your home. If they have to step over your stuff its time to get it moved out of the home.

#3 When was the last time you cleaned the bathroom? Does the toilet have a permanent ring in it, is there toothpaste stuck to the mirror? Maybe there is a stale towel hanging behind the door?  Clean the Bathroom and go as far as making sure the caulking around the tub and toilet are new.

#4 Don’t lock several of the rooms so buyers can t get in to see them. They want to see if the rooms will work for their lifestyle and furniture.

#5 Broken light switches or burned out light bulbs. Nothing is worse than getting into a home and you can turn on a light to get down the very dark hall. Not being able to see inside a room because the light bulbs are burned out can be frustrating and using the phone flashlight just doesn’t cut it.

#6 Not leaving the house for showings. Get out of the house, it can be awkward to be looking at a home and the owner is right there listening to every word you say. Buyers can’t get comfortable and talk and explore the home.

#7 Portable heaters in every room. Does the home not heat well? Is the furnace broken? Why would you need to have portable heaters in every room when there is supposed to be a working furnace?

#8 The roof is covered in Moss and pine needles, get out and clean up your roof. If you’re not maintain your roof what else are you not maintaining?

#9 Clean your house and do the dishes. There is nothing worse than the smell of dirty dishes that are just sitting in the sink, clothes that have obviously been laying around for weeks, garbage laying around and the house in disarray.

#10 Backyard land mines. Pick up the piles of Dog poop. It is hard to step around piles and piles when you’re really trying to see the outside of the home or finding your way to the back shed.

Most buyers will just give up and say let’s go and look at the next house. Your home will not make the cut to the top home. It can be hard to get past even one or two of these items that you are so used to. So, get out there and make sure none of these buyer turn offs will make someone go running from your home that is for sale.
